最早的版本是作为音频编辑软件而开发销售的，从2.0开始转型为非线性编辑软件。

2016年5月24，Magix 公司（欧洲最强劲的、非线性编辑软件设计公司，不仅独霸欧洲市场，同时又占领了美国市场…）发布新闻，宣布正在并购 SONY SCS （Sony Creative Software）的软件产品，包括 SONY Vegas Pro, Movie Studio, Sound Forge Pro, 以及 ACID Pro 等产品线。因此 Sony Vegas Pro 也更名为 MAGIX Video Pro。当然，SONY 公司的4K、RAW剪辑利器、相关产品系列（比如： Catalyst Production Suite，官网的链接在此）, 仍由SONY 公司主导研发，着重于广播电视领域的应用。
